Knowledge Center for Water Treatment and Membranes
Useful knowledge should explain not only what a technology is, but when a value is relevant, under which conditions it was measured and what information is still needed for a decision. The Knowledge Center presents professional foundations clearly without replacing engineering review.
What Is Reverse Osmosis?
Reverse osmosis uses pressure to drive water through a selective membrane. The process creates product water that passes through the membrane and a concentrate stream carrying part of the material that did not pass. Actual performance depends on feed-water composition, pressure, temperature, recovery, pretreatment, design and maintenance. Systems should not be compared using one percentage without the test conditions.
RO, NF and UF: What Is the Difference?
All three are membrane processes, but they are not interchangeable. RO provides broad separation of dissolved constituents according to membrane and conditions. NF provides more selective separation according to objective and water composition. UF focuses on filtration of particles and constituents according to membrane characteristics. Selection depends on water data, target quality and system design.
Why Do Test Conditions Matter?
Flow and rejection values depend on measurement conditions. Pressure, temperature, test-solution concentration and composition, pH and recovery can affect the result. When conditions differ, source values and conditions should be shown without declaring a winner. Unit conversions support reading but do not normalize performance.
How Does Water-System Definition Begin?
Start with the water source and a current analysis, then define flow and target product quality, operating hours, load variation, infrastructure, drainage, space, energy, control and maintenance. For an existing system, add operating data, configuration, issues and results. Only then should process and equipment options be reviewed.

Frequently asked questions
Answers by journey, topic and process stage.
Technical Guides
Professional information on water treatment and membranes, with sources and verification dates where required.
Selection Guides
General principles for selecting a water-treatment solution, not a substitute for individual professional review.
Operations & Maintenance
General principles for the operation and ongoing maintenance of water-treatment systems.
Selecting a water-treatment solution is an engineering and operational process. It begins with the water source, composition, variation over time, required flow, target quality, operating hours, site constraints and maintenance approach. A technology name alone is not sufficient to establish suitability.
